What’s a Side-by-Side?

A side-by-side is a type of powersports vehicle that is about a third the size of a typical passenger car. Most side-by-sides are essentially open to the air, with half-doors and canopies, but no full metal enclosure. Like a car, a side-by-side is operated with a steering wheel and gas/brake pedals.

Seats are arranged in groups of two and they may be either bucket-style or bench-style, with enough seats for two to six passengers at a time. Seatbelts are necessary, as are helmets and other pieces of safety equipment.

How Are Side-by-Sides Used?

As noted, you can use a side-by-side as a work vehicle on a construction site, in forestry, for landscaping, or on a farm or ranch. These vehicles can haul trailers full of loose materials and their cargo spaces can hold tools and supplies to get various jobs done. You can also transport workers across a muddy worksite in a side-by-side. Some people use them as a way to get to and from hunting blinds.
